Risks and Benefits of Seafood Consumption

Seafood consumption for healthy individuals provides an excellent source of nutrition, especially vitamins and minerals, Omega 3, and protein; and is a low fat food. However, care must be taken to avoid risks commonly associated with seafood consumption such as those contaminated by oil, toxins, chemicals, mercury, pollution, and poor water quality. This is true specifically for vulnerable populations including pregnant women, infants, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Physicians play a key role in educating and treating these people.

The purpose of this enduring material is to increase healthcare provider knowledge regarding patient benefit and potential risk for illness as a result of seafood consumption. In order to provide the highest quality of patient care, physicians must know which populations are most vulnerable to seafood borne issues and under what conditions as well as the influences of outside effects on seafood quality such as oil spills, chemicals, toxins, food preparation, water quality, etc.

The Gulf Region Health Outreach Program was developed jointly by BP and the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee as part of the Deepwater Horizon Medical Benefits Class Action Settlement, which was approved by the U.S. District Court in New Orleans on January 11, 2013 and made effective on February 12, 2014.  The Outreach Program is supervised by the court, and is funded with $105 million from the Medical Settlement.
